How to hang decor on a wall step by step
when hanging a Decor on a modern day wall it is important to understand the construction of a wall, the basics are (wooden studs every 16” with drywall on at least 1 side and sometimes both sides), depending on the weight of the decor it is important to anchor to not only the drywall but also the interior stud structure.
it is recommended to use screws on anything heavier than a basic picture frame.
step (1) finding the stud location some hints as to where studs are, all outlets and light switches are mounted on the side of a stud, you will need the determine what side of the switch the stud is, to do so you can remove the outlet cover or light switch cover and stuff a screw driver between the junction box and the drywall, if your on the correct side the screw driver won’t push all the way in before it hits a hard surface, if your are on the wrong side the screw driver will push all the way in, after you determine the correct side you can measure 3/4” away from the edge of the box and this will mark the center of the the stud, from this mark measure in increments of 16” and pick the location best suited for your Decor.
Step (2) determine the height you would like to hang the Decor and make small marks, considering most outlets are between 16-24” you will need to transfer your stud mark up to the height to insert your Nail/Screw, to do so you can take a small piece of string and tie it to a miscellaneous weight you have around the house, this works as something known as a plumb bob, hold the end of the string against the wall and let the weight hang down, move over until the string intersects with the with the stud marks and remark anywhere along the string that you wish to insert an anchor.
Step (3) insert your Screw/Nail into the stud until you reach the desired depth.
Step (4) you are now ready to hang your Decor.
Please note most Drywall is either 1/2 or 5/8” so you will want to use screws/nails that are a minimum of 1-1/4 inches
